W.E.B. Du Bois Double Garden

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the passing of W.E.B. Du Bois and the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, artists and scholars gathered at UMass Amherst in September, 2013, to dialog about Du Bois in preparation for a major modern art exhibition and symposium for fall 2014 at the University Museum of Contemporary Art (UMCA), “Du Bois in Our Time. “  Walter Hood’s collaboration with Carrie May Weems resulted in The Double Garden.  The commemorative installation strives to broaden our understanding of Du Bois’ double consciousness faced by African Americans by being both American and black.
