BRONZEVILLE LAKEFRONT

Chicago, ILlinois

Drawing on the rich history of Bronzeville with its roots in jazz and blues, the landscape framework proposes a quilted landscape that enmeshes Bronzeville’s history, ecology, and culture into a new vibrant African American neighborhood. The landscape is composed of three layers: Three Ribbons, Civic Parks and Social Rooms. The Three Ribbons run parallel to Lake Michigan and reference the sites latent ecologies through woodland, wetland and dune habitat types. While the historic community street of Cottage Grove is brought back to life with its design based on a classic jazz music score. The two major civic parks connect the three ribbons and provide outdoor space for large gatherings and civic events. The social rooms knit together the development parcels with the parks and ribbons, and provide specific outdoor amenities for each of the development block, such as fitness courts, outdoor dining, eco-themed gardens, playgrounds and skateparks. This landscape-led holistic approach to community building provides a cohesive vision for a dynamic public realm to guide future development.
